In this case of glaring hypocrisy I bring to you one of my favorite topics - Big Unions. I won't bring up the fact that unions represent the largest group seeking waivers from Obama's CastroCare - although they lobbied hard for health care "reforms". No, we'll discuss secret ballots - know as "card check". The Employee Free Choice Act (another case of naming a bill the exact opposite of what it empowers) would take away secret ballots for employees and have them sign in front of union officers and other workers. No intimidation there - after all, Big Unions aren't known for violence or worker oppression. Well, here's the hypocrisy:
On Tuesday, a union filed a petition [5-RC-16629] with the National Labor Relations Board office in Baltimore, Maryland. The purpose of the petition was to have the NLRB conduct a secret-ballot election. The employer in this case happens to be the United Food & Commercial Workers, Local 400, based in Landover, Maryland. The petitioning union is the Federation of Agents and International Representatives. [Yes, sometimes union representatives actually have unions represent them against their exploitive employers—the unions.]Yes, apparently employees are asking for help against their oppressive employers - another union. Nice.
So, the union supports card check, crushing the right to secret ballots - but not for them. Huh? I called the main office of UFCW #400, in Landover, Maryland, at 1-800-638-0800, to get their reasoning. They stated their Public Information Officer would get back to me. They haven't. Hoping my car doesn't have a malfunction and "accidently burst into flames" while I sleep.
